Background

ACE2 (Angiotensin I Converting Enzyme 2) belongs to the angiotensin-converting enzyme family of dipeptidylcarboxydipeptidases and has considerable homology to human angiotensin 1 converting enzyme. This secreted protein catalyzes the cleavage of angiotensin I into angiotensin 1-9, and angiotensin II into the vasodilator angiotensin 1-7. The SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 (2019-nCoV) spike (S) proteins mediate viral entry into host cells by binding to a host receptor, ACE2, through the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the S1 subunit, and then fusing the viral and host membranes through the S2 subunit.
